This is a general entry because they come from so many places. I won’t go into too much detail because what you really need to know is that you should never click on a link to any account you may or may not own that comes to you in an email AND you should never call a customer service number sent to you in an email. These scammers are good at masking links to they look like they come from Capital One, or Ebay, or PayPal, or a hundred other places.

In reality they go to another site where you put in your username and password, or more, and BAM your identity is stolen or your accounts are compromised. If you ever get an email telling you there’s an issue with your account, go to the actual website by typing in the company’s url in your address bar. Don’t click the link in the email. If you get a notice saying to call your credit card fraud department and they give you a number, don’t call that number. Call your credit card company at the number on the back of your card or via a number on their official website and inquire.

If you get anything remotely close to either of those, take care not to get nailed by a scammer.
